New instructors!!!

Remco and Sonja are really leaving now

Yes you are reading it right.
Remco and Sonja are leaving Dive Statia and also the island of Statia after 3 years.

After a 2 week holiday to the USA they are going to try to adapt into the Dutch live again.

Because they where not planning to have a goodbye party we (Rudy and Rinda) decided to organize one.

It was a real Dutch party with Dutch food and lots of drinks.

See photo’s from the party in our updated photo album.

Because of the leaving of Remco and Sonja we needed new instructors.

We found this nice Dutch couple.

They are full of energy and they can’t wait to take you diving.

Hello everybody allow us to introduce ourselves.

We are Marieke en Mike a young and spontaneous couple from Holland. We dived all over the world before we found out about this special island.

We both are in love with the oceans, with diving as our big passion. Mike’s big thing is underwater photography while Marieke loves to give you your first underwater experience. We make sure we treat you the way we like to be treated ourselves.

We can’t wait to take you down in our beautiful Statia dive sites.

Hope to see you soon,

Marieke

Hurricane Dean – Preparation and Aftermath

Preparation

Like most people know, we had to prepare for the threat of hurricane Dean.

Therefore we had to remove the dive boats from the water.

Two cranes, Flatbed truck and a forklift were used the whole day to pull all the boats of Statia.

Aftermath

We were lucky that the hurricane past about 180 miles south of us. We did receive Tropical storm force winds and very large waves. And we lost most of the beach.

The local airline stopped all of their flights after 10am.

See more pictures on our photo album.

Turtle Hatchlings

The first turtles have hatched. Rinda and Sonja were able to help guide them to the water.

More are expected to hatch any day. There are more pictures in the photo album.

Turtle Watch

The new season for the turtle patrol has started.

This means that on Zeelandia beach volunteers will walk the whole night to see if turtles (leatherbacks and green) come to lay their eggs on the beach.

On April 19 we where all very lucky to witness one of the leatherback’s laying the eggs and covering up the nest.

We feel very privileged to experience this event because very few people in the world will ever have that chance.

Judge Judy

You’ll never guess who visited Statia.  The most popular American television judge Judith Sheindlin (Judge Judy), her husband Gerry Sheindling (also a popular TV judge of People’s  Court and one of my favorites, Florence Henderson, who played the mother in the popular 1970s TV series, The Brady Bunchy.  Gerry popped into the dive shop and asked Rudy who owned the truck outside.  Rudy said that he did.  Gerry then offered Rudy two of the four women outside if he would drive them uptown.  That’s a long way up you know.  Rudy told him he wanted all four of the women.  He agreed and they entered the dive shop and introduced themselves.  The rest is history.

UK group-January 2007—

Nick and Caroline Robertson Brown (ex employees of Dive Statia) left us three years ago to start their own dive shop in Manchester, England called Orca Divers.  They are a very successful business and have started bringing groups to Statia.  This year’s group was one of the best groups and all in all we had a lot of fun diving, drinking, eating, drinking and partying.  And drinking.  Thank all of you for a great time and we are looking forward to seeing you again in the near future.  Sorry Nick, we had to cut you out of the group picture.

Seahorse and pipefish.

The year 2006 was a very lucky year for rare finds.

We had two seahorses which were found on Double Wreck and on Barracuda.

Lucky Sonja found the very rare white-nose pipefish on Double Wreck.

Redoing the road in town.

The island is restoring the roads in our beautiful historical district to what they use to look in the olden days.

It’s going to look really nice.

As soon as it’s finished we will give you some more pictures.
